SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – Osael Romero scored twice in the final 11 minutes and rallied El Salvador to a 2-2 draw with Trinidad & Tobago on Wednesday to open the CONCACAF final round of World Cup qualifying.
Romero scored in the 79th minute, and his second goal in second-half injury time saved El Salvador, which fell behind 2-0 by the 27th minute. Carlos Edwards scored in the seventh minute and Dwight Yorke added a penalty in the 27th, giving Trinidad an early advantage in its push for a second straight appearance in the World Cup finals.
El Salvador was coming off a staggering finish to the Central American Nations Cup in January. It opened with a 1-1 draw to Nicaragua, lost to Costa Rica in the semifinals in a match it that was abandoned in the second half because of too few players, and ended up with a loss against host Honduras in the third-place match.
El Salvador will next host the United States on March 28 while Trinidad & Tobago will be home against Honduras.
Three of the six remaining teams will automatically qualify for the 32-team field in South Africa, while the fourth-place team will face a South American side for another possible berth from CONCACAF.
