Saturday, 8 May, 2010 Timor-Leste:
The inaugural Digicel Liga, Timor-Leste’s first nationwide football league, kicked-off with the clash of Dili Leste and Viqueque in front of over 6,000 spectators at the National Stadium in Dili on Saturday, 8 May 2010.
The tournament, featuring 14 teams from 13 districts across the country and with a record prize pool of US$10,000, was established as part of Digicel’s four-year partnership with Football Federation of Timor-Leste announced in December of last year. The agreement sees Digicel support the development of Football in the country from grassroots right up to the international level with all 14 clubs participating provided with home and away kits, training gear and equipment.
The first phase of games in the Digicel Liga will be a round robin series with the teams divided into three groups. Group A is made up of four teams and Groups B and C comprise five teams each. The teams will play each other over the four week period in May with the leading two teams from each Group qualifying for the second phase of action where the remaining six teams will play each other once.. The final round of games will be played on Saturday, 10 July and the team with the most points at the end of the series will be crowned the first Digicel Liga champions. The tournament, organised by the FFTL, will be played under the Federation International de Football Association (FIFA) rules.
