St. George’s, Grenada: Thirty aspiring young footballers have been selected from around the country to participate in the Grenada leg of the Digicel Kick Start Clinics 2011 which will take place on the spice isle from Wednesday 4th to Saturday 8th October.
The young athletes were selected by Grenada Football Association accredited coaches during the recent GFA Football Fiesta and National Youth Cup Championship.
The Digicel Kick Start Clinics offer talented young Caribbean footballers a once in a lifetime opportunity to train under Jamaican-born England and Liverpool football legend, John Barnes.
In addition, from each of the eight Clinic countries, a number of players will be selected to go through to the elite Digicel Academy where they will spend a week developing their skills and technical ability as well as learning valuable life skills such as personal awareness and self-esteem
under the leadership of top Barclays Premier League coaches from the Sunderland Academy, assisted by John Barnes.
Grenada Football Association President, Cheney Joseph, said; “The Digicel Kick Start Clinics are the ideal start needed at this time to move our youth football programme forward. The Grenada Football Association welcomes the ongoing partnership of Digicel in promoting sports
and in particular football
as an alternative to crime and violence. We welcome Grenada’s inclusion in this year’s Digicel Kick Start Clinics programme, and we eagerly anticipate the positive effect it promises to have on thirty of Grenada’s future football stars.”
While in previous Digicel Kick Start Clinic programmes, the select few aspiring young footballers won a chance to spend a week in Sunderland AFC, this year Digicel is bringing these internationally acclaimed professional coaches to teach in the Digicel Academy
meaning many more players will have the chance to fulfill their dreams of being coached at Premier League level. The broader, more inclusive approach to the new-look Digicel Kick Start Clinics programme was developed in consultation with the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) and its affiliate members.
Digicel Grenada Country Manager, Patricia Maher, said; “Digicel Grenada is honoured to be selected to host this clinic on our island and our talented footballers get this once in a lifetime opportunity to succeed”.
Ultimately, the week-long training camp at the Digicel Academy will host the crème de la crème of the region’s talent where they will receive expert coaching in the beautiful game.
The Digicel Kick Start Clinics programme officially kicks off on Sunday 18th September in Haiti before travelling on to Panama, New York, St. Kitts & Nevis, Grenada, Suriname, Jamaica and Trinidad and culminating in a week long training session at the Digicel Academy (also in Trinidad) from Tuesday November 1st to Monday November 7th.
