The fourth-place finisher in CONCACAF’s World Cup qualifying will host the first leg of a two-game playoff against a team from South America for the final berth in the 32-team field next year in South Africa.
CONCACAF was drawn to stage the first match on November 14 at the FIFA Congress in the Bahamas on Tuesday. The two-day FIFA Congress followed the CONCACAF Congress, which was held on Monday at the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island in the Bahamas.
The fifth-place team in South America will host the second leg on November 18, with the aggregate winner completing the World Cup field.
The top three finishers from CONCACAF automatically qualify for South Africa.
With the European playoffs for eight runners-up from its nine groups also scheduled for November 14 and November 18, the second leg of the CONCACAF-South America playoff will determine the 32nd and last place in the finals for World Cup South Africa 2010.
The United States leads the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying with seven points from three games as the “hexagonal” approaches its midpoint. Costa Rica is second with six points, two ahead of Honduras in third. Mexico is fourth with three points while El Salvador and Trinidad & Tobago have two each.
Paraguay has 24 points to lead qualifying in South America, which receives four automatic berths. Brazil is second with 21, one more than Chile and two better than Argentina. Uruguay is in fifth place with 17 points, three more than Colombia and Ecuador which are next.
