Bruny Pierre Richard: Going out on a high
He has been the Captain of the Haitian National Team for a while and under his leadership, the team has experienced glorious moments, as well as moments of sadness. He is about to start his last international competition, an optimistic Bruny talks about the past and his hopes for his 4th and last Gold Cup.
Tell us about your beginnings Bruny?
I have been playing football since I was five years old. However, when I was 10, a Frenchman named Jacques Monteaurouf noticed my talent while I was playing with a team called "Les Enfants du Bresil" which was made up of young footballers from my local neighborhood. We began working under his leadership and, when he left, we joined the training center of the Sports Club St. Louis, where we worked under the leadership of the former sports secretary of state, Evans Lescouflair - nicknamed Dady. From that point on, everything moved very fast. We played at all levels growing up - junior, youth and senior football, where we are until now.
Has the road been long in particular to the national team?
Yes, we have been part of the national team for several years now and I’m proud to be part of this. We have seen many highs and lows with this team of course, but it is part of a footballer’s life. I only focus on the moments of happiness.
It was believed that you had quit on December, and here you are here again as captain?
After our elimination from the race in the Digicel Caribbean Championships in 2008 in Jamaica, I thought it was my last international competition, as the next closest international competition would be in 2010 for the national team. However, destiny stepped in and got me back on the team. I think that the Gold Cup will indeed be my last international competition playing for my country before my testimonial which is taking place in August.
What are your hopes for the team in this last international competition?
I would like to leave on a high. I believe that we should pass the first round of the competition. Then, go as far as possible by taking the games as they come. I hope that we will do our best to reach the highest level. and I hope to get the most pleasure and joy in this important tournament.
Perhaps with a game against the Americans?
Yes, but not on July 11th during our match in the first round. I would prefer it to be in the finals of the competition and we win the trophy at the end.
Goodluck
Thank you
