COPA Digicel kicks off on January 22nd with eight national teams competing in the tournament
Tegucigalpa, Honduras, December 11th, 2008 -<> Digicel, the largest mobile operator in the Caribbean and new entrant to the Central American market, launched the Copa de Naciones Digicel 2009 on Tuesday this week in partnership with the Central American Union of Football (UNCAF). The tournament takes place in Honduras from January 22nd until February 1st 2009 with Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama all competing for the title of Champion of UNCAF.
<>During Tuesday’s launch to announce Digicel’s second successive sponsorship of the tournament, a draw took place to decide which teams will form Group A and Group B.
<>With host country Honduras automatically securing a position in Group A alongside seeded Nicaragua and Belize, the remaining spot in Group A will be filled by El Salvador. In Group B, reigning Copa Digicel 2007 Champions, Costa Rica, automatically qualified for a place and will be joined by Panama and Guatemala.
<>Rafael Tinoco, President of UNCAF, said at the launch, “I’d like to thank President Callejas and Secretary Hawit of FENAFUTH for their valuable contribution in ensuring that Honduras is the host country of the Copa de Naciones Digicel 2009.”

<>This is the tenth COPA Digicel - and second title sponsored by Digicel - which is organized by UNCAF and takes place every two years. The top five teams from the COPA Digicel 2009 qualify for the CONCACAF Gold Cup which will occur in the summer months of 2009.
Digicel is also the title sponsor of the Digicel Caribbean Championship which is the equivalent qualifier for the 4 Caribbean teams to go through to the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
The Central American Union of Football (UNCAF) is based in Guatemala and was founded in 1990. CONCACAF delegated administrative authorization and the promotion of football to UNCAF in Central America.
