A fantastic day of drama at the World Cup - this is what the beautiful game is all about. Few would have anticipated a 4-0 win for Germany in a game against Argentina. Germany got a crucial early goal from a set piece and were able to defend in numbers from there. They were extremely hard working and ultimately the better team. Germany do not necessarily have the ‘star players’ in their line-up but are a young, athletic side with an abundance of enthusiasm and pace. When you have a young side, they tend to follow instruction to the letter compared to a team of older more experienced players who might have their own ideas. Older, more experienced players often do things their way as opposed to within the structure designed by the manager. Ultimately Argentina were poor today – they didn’t pass the ball as well as they have done previously and faced a German side who were very tight and played perfectly on the counter attack.

It just goes to show that the best players – the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo and Maicon – don’t necessarily make a winning World Cup side. Nowadays, managers need to focus on harmony among the players and how they play together as a unit and Germany is the epitome of this. Following the last World Cup, the German football federation put in place a structure that focuses on youth development. They now work to specific goals and targets and are focused on developing talent in a particular style and structure. Their recent wins at underage level have proven how such a scheme can be successful and their progress at this World Cup can be attributed to this approach.

Paraguay also played very well and should have taken the lead with their penalty effort and this would have made it extremely difficult for Spain. However, Spain’s class was evident throughout with a great run from Fabregas which created the vital chance to take the lead. Spain may give the opposition chances but their attacking mentality and technical ability must be admired. Having a player like Fabregas spring from the bench is such an asset and the manager will have a tough time making his selection ahead of the semi-final.

Spain will now face Germany and the Netherlands will play Uruguay. While Germany have been sensational to date, I believe Spain will have the quality to overcome them and go on to win the final.
