Tuesday, November 01, 2011: PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO – The launch of the inaugural 2011 Digicel Kick Start Academy was held at Aura on Tuesday, November 1, 2011. Media, athletes and the Honourable Minister of Sport, Anil Roberts turned out to celebrate this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity provided to 37 talented young athletes from seven countries across the region. The culmination of the Digicel Kick Start Clinics led by Liverpool and England football legend John Barnes, the Digicel Kick Start Academy will provide the players with the opportunity to experience life as a professional footballer while benefiting from the international experience of Coach Barnes as well as Kevin Ball and Carlton Fairweather of Sunderland AFC.
Geared towards young players who have a strong desire to succeed on the football pitch, the Digicel Kick Start Academy continues Digicel's drive to provide aspiring athletes with opportunities to achieve their dreams. The programme consists of a week-long full immersion in football training that will leave them with an understanding of the discipline, determination and organisational skills needed to excel in any field – athletic or otherwise. They will also be observed by scouts from US prep schools who will have an eye out for talented players to be invited to play abroad.
The itinerary will include a mix of fun with the necessary drills and training. On Friday, November 4, the players will be treated to a road trip that will begin at the recently opened Digicel IMAX theatre. There, they will engage in the Digicel IMAX experience at the only facility in the Caribbean to offer the enhanced picture, sound and 3D for which the theatres are known world-wide. They will then journey to Maracas beach for an afternoon of fun in the sun. On Saturday, November 5, they will engage in a Hot Shot competition, which will allow them to show off some of the new skills and techniques learned during the preceding week. At this session we will invite the public to participate in the Hot Shot competition also so please come and join us at the Savannah from 10am to 12 noon.
Sunday November 6 – the last day of the Digicel Kick Start Academy – will culminate with the closing ceremony, where the players will be presented with their awards and commemorate a week well-spent becoming better athletes and learning the techniques and life skills necessary to succeed in any and all endeavours.
